Epidural Steroid Injection in NJ

What is an Epidural Steroid Injection?

An Epidural Steroid Injection is an outpatient procedure that involves administering a steroid-anesthetic medication into the epidural space in the spine column. The medication used in this type of injection can reduce the inflammation and swelling of spinal nerves that may be irritated, causing pain and discomfort.  The injection may take approximately 3-5 days to offer maximal relief.  Epidural Steroid Injections can be safely performed at a surgery center, with minimal discomfort. The entire procedure takes about 5-10 minutes.

What to Expect

The patient will lie flat on an examination table with a small cushion under their abdomen, which will straighten the spine and make the injection much easier. Your physician will administer a local anesthetic to numb the injection site.  Under fluoroscopic guidance, a thin needle is inserted through the anesthetized skin into the epidural space.  Contrast dye may be injected to confirm correct needle placement. Subsequently a combination of a steroid and a long acting local anesthetic will be injected to help alleviate your pain.  Most patients report significant relief following the first injection, some patients may require multiple injections until the medication takes full effect.
